The Journey of Motor Vehicles since 1885

First Car

Ever since German inventor Karl Benz built the first practical modern automobile, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, the world of automobiles has transformed dramatically. Benz's invention sparked a transportation revolution.

Engines became more advanced, technology exponentially increased, and car designs evolved from boxy and regal to sleek and aerodynamic.

Starting in 1886, many inventors and entrepreneurs entered the "horseless carriage" business. Henry Ford made cars affordable and revolutionized the industry with a new transmission mechanism and steering wheel for the Model T. Oldsmobile pioneered the assembly line with identical, interchangeable parts. Thomas Davenport, who invented the first American DC electric motor, installed his motor in a small model car, operating it on a short circular electrified track, which marked the birth of the electric vehicles.

In 1949, high-compression V8 engines and modern car bodies were introduced.

The 1970s brought a turbulent oil crisis, inflation, and stagnant economic conditions, leading manufacturers to produce smaller, more fuel-efficient cars.

In the following decades, car production increased in Asia and other countries, with China becoming the world's largest car manufacturer in 2009.

We'd like to celebrate some of the most iconic cars throughout history.
